Signing of agreement between Denmark and Bangladesh on a Climate Change Adaptation Pilot Project

On 21 August 2013, Ms. Nurjahan Begum, Joint Secretary, Economic Relations Division and Ms. Lene Volkersen, Chargé d’affaires, Royal Danish Embassy signed an agreement on a new Climate Change Adaptation Pilot Project. The project is to be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives in Hatiya Upazila of Noakhali, Rangamati Upazila of Laksmipur, Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali and Amtoli Upazila of Barguna.

The total budget of the pilot project is BDT 21.27 cores with a Danish contribution of BDT 14.18 cores and a Bangladeshi contribution of BDT 7.09 cores. The duration of the pilot project will be one year.

The goal of pilot project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of climate change adaptation initiatives within rural infrastructure. Further the project will raise local community awareness of climate change adaptation. The activities will be implemented using labor intensive methods and a large number of poor rural women will be employed through Labor Contracting Societies (LCSs). 

The main activities of the pilot project will be improvement of cross drainage of rural roads, protection of roads by raising embankments, protection of road embankments by tree plantation, excavation and maintenance of drainage canals, slope protection of roads embankment by turfing and sand filling/brick mattressing, improved access to cyclone shelters and community awareness raising like training of LCS members and Union Parishad (UP) members in climate change adaptation.
