Field visit to the Asian University for Women at Chittagong

On Sunday, February 23 2014, the Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ms. Hanne Fugl Eskjær, visited the Asian University for Women at Chittagong to learn more about the university and its contribution to the women’s advancement and empowerment through higher education in Asia.

The Asian University for Women opened its first academic programme in 2008 with a class of 130 female students, and now has 500 students from 16 different countries. The university offers seven majors and thirteen minors, and has collaborative programs with several countries around the world. Aalborg University in Denmark has initiated a formal partnership on research and sharing of knowledge with the Asian University for Women.

At the visit, the Danish Ambassador was very happy to see the energy and enthusiasm among the students. She remarked that gender equality and women’s rights were very important for uplifting the status of women and education play an instrumental role to achieve this goal.

In her remarks, the Danish Ambassador also mentioned that Denmark was committed to promoting gender equality in its development cooperation with Bangladesh, which is a key to build a happier and more prosperous world for everyone.
