EU HoMs joint statement

Dhaka, 27 November 2012

We were greatly saddened to hear of the appalling incident at a garment factory in Ashulia on Saturday.

We deplore the loss of so many young lives and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims on this national day of mourning.

While we recognize the importance of readymade garments to the Bangladesh economy, and appreciate that the European market is the largest export destination for apparel and textile products, the EU has always been very clear about the need to improve working standards and safety in this sector. Occupational safety and health is a core element of the Decent Work agenda that the EU, along with other partners, has been supporting through concrete projects including one which directly targets working conditions in factories in the garments sector. We stand ready to support all efforts by Bangladesh to raise standards in the industry.
